Study title:
Problematic Pornography Use, Mental Health, and Suicidality among Young Adults

What did the study examine?

The study included 332 domestic and international students at a university in Italy, with an average age of 23. Participants completed an anonymous online survey between March and May 2023.

The researchers examined associations between problematic pornography use and anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, mental well-being, and measures of suicidal thoughts and planning. They also examined differences by gender.

What did it find?

Problematic pornography use was associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress and loneliness, lower life satisfaction, and measures of suicidal thoughts. The study also found differences between men and women on some measures.

Among women, problematic use was significantly associated with suicidal thoughts and suicide planning, although their average problematic-use scores were lower than those of men in the sample.

How should the results be interpreted?

The findings suggest that professional attention may be appropriate when online sexual behavior is accompanied by distress, loneliness or suicidal thoughts. They do not mean that all pornography viewing leads to a mental-health problem, and they are not a substitute for an individual assessment by a qualified professional.

Study limitations

The study was cross-sectional and relied on self-report data from a relatively small university sample. It therefore cannot establish causation or determine which factor came first. The findings should be interpreted cautiously and investigated further through longitudinal research and in other populations.
